'I Smell Emmy] is the fifth episode of season 2, and the 19th overall.

A female prison volunteer is attacked by a rough female inmate. On the way to the court hearing that is a result of that attack, the inmate takes ill at a very precise time, allowing her to escape.

Plot[]

Emmy Sharp attacks her teacher Claire Lyons after class. On the drive to her arraignment she gets diarrhea, leading to a toilet stop. After the guards uncuff her in the bathroom she rushes to the towel dispenser where a screwdriver is hidden. While she is loosening the screws of the window, one of the guards catches her. Emmy drives the screwdriver in his neck before fleeing through the window.

As Ray is briefing the team on the escape, he tells Julianne to explain what happened since he is grossed out. Julianne hesitatingly talks about Emmy using her arraignment to escape. Ray continues, revealing that Emmy ate 30 packs of pistachios before she left. Lloyd, highly amused, concludes that this means she had massive diarrhea. Ray notes Emmy is clever and dangerous, showing them the picture of the guard she killed. Erica recognizes that she used a particular, rather rare screwdriver, which makes Shea realize that she had outside help, with somebody casing out the rest stop.

Shea introduces Erica, Lloyd and Julianne to a product he has developed, elbow savers, but no one is impressed. Ray interrupts them, telling Lloyd he has gotten a postcard from Damien Fontleroy. In Ray's office Lloyd looks at the postcard on which is written Dr. Lowery, I did not have sexual relations with that woman, quoting Bill Clinton. Ray tells him they received three other postcards tested positive for Damien's fingerprints and DNA. Lloyd worriedly comments that if Damien hasn't killed yet, he will soon.

Ray and Erica question Ashlee, who visited Emmy several times. She claims she doesn't know anything about Emmy's escape plan. When Ray digs if there was any place Emmy would go, she reluctantly tells them Emmy might go for the guy who ratted her out. This turns out to be wrong. Emmy instead goes after Claire Lyons' husband, killing him for Claire who is her lover and accomplice.

This murder attracts the Breakout Kings attention. The local cop has a preliminary suspect, a man working in the guardhouse who got tight-lipped when questioned. Investigating the crime scene, Loyd absentmindedly (working on Damien's clue) deduces the guy was looking through the Lyons' window and masturbating. The man admits this is true, telling them he saw two women making out. Erica finds a screwdriver set in the garage, matching the one Emmy used, telling them that Claire was involved, but Shea comments that Lloyd already figured it out. Erica pointedly asks him if he shouldn't figure out Damien's postcard. Lloyd replies that he doesn't remember much from the Clinton scandal since he was busy in 1998. The makes him realize he was studying Damien at the time and asks Julianne for the tapes of his interviews with him.

Interviews with neighbors and Sean Lyon's phone reveal that they had a terrible marriage. The team discusses Emmy and Claire's relationship and Erica points out that either one of them could be a LURD, lesbian until release date, pulling out of the relationship now that they're free. Shea looks at Sean Lyon's finances, telling Ray he was "as shady as an oak tree", hiding cash somewhere. This leads them to a storage unit he rented. Emmy and Claire are there as well, managing to grab a bag of gold coins before they are discovered. Emmy shoots at the team and they manage to escape.

The tapes from Lloyd's interviews with Damien arrive and they watch the tape from the day of Clinton's quote. This is the day Damien started talking about his mother, whom he considers to be the source of his problematic relationship to women. Lloyd thinks he might go after his mother, but Shea jokingly comments he could mean Lloyd's mother. Lloyd worriedly calls his mother and finds out that Damien sent a postcard to her. In this, Damien tells Lloyd he has changed and refers to Philadelphia.

Emmy and Claire try to fence the gold coins but the fence recognizes them, pulling out his gun and trying to take their load. Claire shoots him and the couple take all of his money before fleeing the scene and getting a room in a fancy hotel.

Meanwhile, Damien stalks a young girl and eventually kidnaps her, getting her to come with him by pretending to be a marshal, using Charlie's badge. He binds her to a chair and tells her he hopes she won't bore him as she is crying.

Emmy reveals she has used Claire the whole time. She calls her boyfriend and tells him to kill Claire. After he drowned her in the bathtub, they set off. The team find out about the hotel from Claire's search history and when they arrive, they find Claire dead. Going over the security footage, they manage to identify Emmy's boyfriend since they saw him before, at Ashlee's. While Ray is calling Julianne in order to find out more about this guy, Lloyd manages to solve Damien's clues: he had quoted several other presidents. He asks Julianne to look if there are these street names in Philadelphia. Julianne finds out that Jackson and Kenndey street intersect, and that there is a factory called Clinton, so Ray notifies the marshal's office in Philadelphia.

Emmy and her boyfriend plan to escape on a cruise ship but Ray, Shea and Erica catch up to them since the guy's bandmates told on them, disgruntled about the band's breakup.

In Philadelphia the police finds the kidnapped girl alive at the Clinton factory. Just as Ray announces the good news, Lloyd's phone rings. Damien tells him he is impressed with Lloyd and that he's going to have to raise his games. Lloyd attempts to manipulate him but Damien sees through him. He thanks Lloyd for freeing him and showing him that he doesn't need Brent before hanging off. Lloyd comments that Damien hasn't changed that much - he still needs an audience, and now his audience is Lloyd.

The Breakout Kings are disappointed they don't get to investigate Damien. Ray relents, and instead of sending them back to Maybelle, they're looking together at the case.

Quotes[]

Ray Zancanelli: Wait til you hear how she escaped. Go ahead, tell 'em Jules.

Julianne Simms: Why me?

Ray Zancanelli: Because it grosses me out.

Julianne Simms: [Hesitantly] Okay. Um, Emmy, attacked a volunteer teacher in prison and then used her arraignment as an opportunity, to escape.

Ray Zancanelli: And according to her cellie, she ordered thirty packs of pistachios, that's at least a pound.

Shea Daniels: I'd eat a pound of pistachios.

Ray Zancanelli: All at once? 'Cause that's what she did thirty minutes before she went in the van. The thing is, according to her medical jacket she's mildly allergic to pistachios.

Lloyd Lowery: Oh my goodness.

Ray Zancanelli: You know what that means?

[Lloyd nods]

Ray Zancanelli: Then you can tell everyone else what happened.

Lloyd Lowery: Pistachios are a natural laxative, especially if you're allergic to them. So, if she ate that many within thirty minutes she would need to take a potty break, and I'm talking an emergency potty break. Okay, no I'm talking evacuate the villagers 'cause we have a Chilean mudslide.
